Who’s riding where?
As tough as it is not to ride flightline…i really want to get out there. I have been riding locally in Oceanside/Carlsbad. Noble Canyon in the rain last week and trying to figure out some new spots that I can hit up after work…i only have about 1.5 hours of light when I get home to carlsbad….any suggestions?

We’ve been shuttling several times a week to Calavera at noon. Very difficult to get any kind of “loop” established there. A lot of areas that would cater to the advanced riders are closed off to facilitate the gnatcatchers, etc. Gravel roads are not mtb friendly, so the parking lot at the end of Carlsbad Village Drive is not a good place to start/stop. Obviously, the mtb community was not involved in that setup.
Really miss the Flightline rides! You could ride it on different days and not do the same loop! The police station/skatepark area at the trailhead of Flightline is perfect! All user facilities already exist, including parking, water faucet, porta-potty, etc.

I have riden it about twice in the past two weeks, but after posting and reading others efforts, I agree to not ride it. I have been hitting Lake Hodges, Daily Ranch and local trails in San Elijo Hills.

The closest I can come up with is Elfin Forest. While it does not have the structures of Flightline, it is a good lung buster for the climbs. I am fortunate that I live near Sycamore and PQ but I regularly venture up to Hodges and Elfin. The sad thing is I only just “discovered” Flightline (Thanks Mtn Bike Bill!) and was enjoying the hard work of others. I hope we can convince the city council, county and land managers to leave it as it is for another 20 years.

I am working with Minette at SDMBA to coordinate a ride in the Calaveras area in order to familiarize people with that trail area just to the north of Flightline. While it is not as steep and varied as the trails in Flightline, it is fun, close and legal (I think). The official group ride will likely be in two weeks so that there is plenty of time for word to spread around ( I’m thinking Sat, November 11). For anybody that reads this and would like to ride it sooner, I will be riding Lake Calaveras tomorrow morning (Sat, October 28) at 8:30ish. If you would like to join me for an intermediate paced tour of Lake Calaveras, meet at the Calaveras Hills Community Park. I will be at the lot around 8:15 and ready to take off for the trails around 8:30ish. The park is located at 2997 Glasgow Drive, near the eastern termination of Carlsbad Village Drive. If you want or need more details, e-mail me at rcdynes@sbcglobal.net . ( I will be checking e-mails til 5pm tonight).

Ryan was kind enough to guide me through Calaveras. Unfortunately the majority of the best trails are slated for the bulldozer but they will be there for the short term. So please use them for local rides and continue to refrain from Flightline. The showing of good faith will only reinforce the offer by us to partner with the responsible parties at Flightline. Get together on the next Calaveras ride and use it to talk with each other about the progress we are making.

GROUP RIDE - SATURDAY, NOV. 11 @ LAKE CALAVERAS
At the request of SDMBA, I will be leading a ride throughout the Lake Calaveras region. For now, Lake Calaveras represents the best (only) riding opportunity available to us in the coastal region of North San Diego County. So, if you would like to become more familiar with the singletrack opportunities of the Lake Calaveras area come on out. The ride will start at the Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad (near the eastern termination of Carlsbad Village Drive) at 8:30am on Saturday, November 11. All riders are welcome!!!!!!

All the good singletrack of course. Well most of the singletrack 90% Go ride with Ryan and you will see. Un fortunately it isn’t a flightline but at least it is something. Now that Markus has forged ahead and torn down Skyline parity on the level of challenging ride will soon be the same. Don’t forget to vote and remember how your local government listen to your voice.

Besides the obvious Daley and Hodges rides, some North County riders park at the Deer Springs park n’ ride off I-15 and go north into the undeveloped land on the west side. There are lots of old jeep and utility roads. It’s a mix of private land and aqueduct easements. Access is also possible (I didn’t say legal) from Champagne Blvd on the east or twin Oaks Valley on the west (by the old quarry). Although you can 4WD up into there, I don’t recommend leaving a vehicle unattended while you ride. Better to park at Deer Springs or Lawrence Welks. I think this area could tolerate some singletrack development for a few years before the bulldozers turn it into the Stonegate luxury estates.

I have a spot in Vista/San Marcos area that needs more riders.
I have been riding out at the north end of Las Posas Road for the last 6 years and it really needs a few more people to come and explore its potential. There are trails on both sides of the valley, most have only remained rideable because of the occasional motorcycle but all pretty fun. If there were a few people interested, a switchback trail going up both sides would really make the place awsome. Hope to see a few more riders out there…

Robert,
I live in O’Side. How do you get to the place that you ride off of Las Posas Road ?

Hi Jon,
Robert didn’t reply yet, so I will — do a map/satellite search. It looks like you just go straight up (north) on N. Las Posas to the end in the new housing development. It’s near (”behind” or north) of Palomar College off Mission. I checked the satellite photo because I used to ride there 15 yrs ago, and assumed nothing was left after the development (and I moved). There were once vernal pools and endangered plants (chocolate lily) where houses are now. I think Robert may have meant “both sides of the mountain” rather than “valley”, but I can see he’s right, the old jeep roads are still up there and the potential for up & down connecting singletrack would be good. I’m not sure about parking, residential street is probably okay if discreet, or maybe Robert can specify.
