Acquisition of County Airport (FlightLine)

From Minette of SDMBA.

I wanted to let people know that I am going to speak at the Carlsbad City Council Meeting next Tuesday, it starts at 6:00pm at CARLSBAD CITY HALL, 1200 CARLSBAD VILLAGE DRIVE.

I am going to ask that City Council move forward with acquisition of the County Airport Property (Flightline) as soon as possible.

This item is not on the agenda, but I want them to know that the trails community is anxiously awaiting their action.

If anyone is available to attend the meeting, support in the audience would be beneficial. Bring your bike helmet to show your affiliation. I will say that I represent several community groups, and if there are people present in the audience, that will lend credibility.

Minette, how did it go?

Regarding my public comment to the Carlsbad City Council at the May meeting:

We had a good turn out of supporters, maybe 12, many with bike helmets. We had to wait for over an hour until it was my turn to speak.

My brief 3 minutes went well. I got some thoughtful questions from Council Members, so I know they were giving it some thought. Julie Nygaard, the newest council member, (not related to Diane Nygaard of Preserve Calavera) made a comment that I will follow up on.

The City Council and Mayor are starting to understand that the area was used for recreation and bikes were there. And now the County has closed it to the public. Mayor Lewis said he remembered “seeing folks do their thing” out there. Julie Nygaard said “Maybe we should write a letter to the County.” So I intend to follow-up with her on that.

I intend to request that Carlsbad City Council recommend to San Diego County to re-open the area to the public as soon as possible.
Of course we are still dealing with the no-bikes issue in the Conservation Easement, but getting trails open to hikers and runners would be a start.
