Dept. of Public Works Responsibility

Minette went to the county offices today to get the “parcel number” of the property, since the County seemed to need this info to do any research on their end, and to see if I could track down Maryanne Vancio, the County Trails Coordinator.Minette found out that Maryanne’s dept is not responsible for this parcel. It is under the responsibility of the Dept. of Public Works (DPW) because the land is associated with the Airport somehow. Minette is now tracking down the person in this dept. to see about ammending the CE. Maryanne’s dept is assisting her in finding the right contact.

A little info about the new department we are dealing with:

DPW works closely with the departments of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and  Planning and Land Use (DPLU) to coordinate trail efforts within the unincorporated area. DPR administers a system of trails within County Parks, and DPW has primary responsibility for trails outside of parks.

One of DPW’s primary activities involves the planning and implementation of regional trails intended to connect with trail systems at local levels. This effort requires close coordination with various entities, including: cities; state and federal land managers; community planning groups; trail groups; and professional organizations.

No one has pinpointed the exact date of CNLM’s planned demo. Minette will contact Markus on this.

Minette does think the fasted way to intervene is to contact the office of the County Supervisor- Bill Horn. His office and staff members should be able to respond quickly.  I think this would be best received if the requests came from the community.

Ryan has generously offered his efforts to write a template letter and submit it to for distribution on RideFlight.com

Ryan, email the letter to rideflightline(at)gmail.com and I will post on the home page and the support page which will soon be ready for us all.

That’s certainly encouraging news. Sounds like the DPW would be a good partner to have in this fight.

Minette, based on your experience, would it be worth a phone call to Supervisor Horn’s office to give them the heads up about what’s going on and advise that letters in support of saving this area will follow? I’m just wondering if he and/or his staff would be able to quickly put a “hold” on the trail destruction if we can provide a compelling case via phone.

I received a response today from Derek Gade, Public Works Manager. He had been requested by Supervisor Horn to contact me regarding the Flightline issue. I provided him with as much information as I could including links to the website and previous info that has been generated. I am expecting a call back from him for further discussion. He will inturn report back up to Supervisor Horn and the Board

A lot of politicians are currently preoccupied with next Tuesday’s elections. I hope that Supervisor Horn’s staff can get this issue moved up to the top of the docket swiftly.

Any response from KUSI’s Turko, or any other news organization?
