Progress takes effort

For those that showed up to the meeting tonight we appreciate your support and need your help. For those who couldn’t make it we ask for your assistance. First things first, we need legal assistance in filing an injunction to stop the trails from being torn down. Demolition is scheduled to start in only a few weeks so time is of the essence. If you or someone you know is willing to help out, please contact us at rideflightline@gmail.com

Thanks
-Quinn

Quinn,

Thanks for setting this page up. I would strongly urge to put together a basic flyer with the essential information and ask all local bicycle stores to post it. I have spent hundreds of dollars this year alone in local bicycle stores and it’s in their interest that we have local riding opportunities and a growing MTB community. People understand money andthe store owners and managers can also exert some pressure on local government.

I would also suggest to meet regularly in order to organize these things. Web blogs are nice but ultimately result in little action. We’re just venting to each other. Can we have a weekly meeting at the parking lot with progress reports and action items?

I think this is a great idea; but we’ll need to raise funds for this. Then we need to get volunteers to distribute these flyers throughout San Diego to stores where the shop and where they know people…and beyond.

Setting up regularly meetings with ACTION ITEMS is a great idea.

I made some logos and a basic flyer, it’s on http://jeromelacote.com/rideflightline/
All comments and feedbacks are welcome.

When the flyer is ready, everyone could just xerox it at his work when it’s possible and spread it as much as he can.

why not make a ridefligline myspace page ?you could do a search for everyone intrested in biking in so cal and re direct them to this page for free.Someone with a little multi media savy could make a professional myspace page.It would be a very easy way to greatly increse exsposure. If someone would make a professional page I would hapily help by spaming friend requests.

After the meeting someone came up to me and asked if I knew anything about the ownership of the hillsides off in the distance. Like me, he was probably dreaming of miles of trails, just for bikes, that would offer the thrill that is so hard to come by “legally”. For me very few things can offer the same rush as cleaning that super technical section of trail. It started me thinking, why can’t San Diego have a bike park like we see in other cities and resorts? San Diego is the perfect setting for it. Top level competitive athletes come to live and train here, the X-Games were held here, skateboard parks are now mainstream and built into new city parks all over San Diego.

What would it take? For starters, it would take careful planning, lots of convincing and a heck of a lot of work. I started looking at the City of Carlsbad website to see what the Planning Dept. had on its agenda. I saw that there are areas designated for public use and recreation, but their development depends on community “input”. We need people like you, yeah, you guys I saw at the meeting, to get out there and start “putting in”. It would take a commitment to participate in community decisions, sit through boring meetings, write letters, and organize support.

If someone out there has the time and desire to follow up on something like this, please take the initiative. There is a place out there that is right for San Diego’s first Bike Park. I think this might be the right time for it too. It is time for Mountain Biking to progress in San Diego, but “progress takes effort.”

The county trail coordinator is back today. Last week she said she would meet after the 25th. I e-mailed her last night and told her how flightline has become an integral part of not just my lifestyle but in others lifestyle. I tried to explain how flightline represents the more current style of mtn biking. Hopefully she has an open mind. But I can’t assume nothing has to change so I guess the meeting will be instructive to all.

I’ve spent the last 10 years on the Flightline Trails. I’ve seen the trails dwindle due to the “progress” of Carlsbad Oaks business park construction. We need to keep Flightline in tact. It is the jewel of crowded Southern California. It is the recreation center of hard working professional people seeking a sanity check from a long day in an office cubicle. Appreciate this site! Keep it rolling!

Got an e-mail from Maryanne Vancio the trail coordinator for the county. I am attempting a meeting at the trail today. Left ways to contact me with her and hopefully we can get it done today. Time is of the essence since the trail destruction is set for early November according to Markus Speileberg of the CNLM ( Center for Natural Land Management )

I have written to Supervisor Horn and have received a response from Christopher Champine, Director of Constitutional Services. He informed me that this has been referred through Walt Ekard, Chief Administrative Officer, to John Snyder in the Dept. of Public Works. He in turn will report back up the line and will respond to my letter directly. I had requested to Supervisor Horn that the removal of the erected structures on the site be stopped until after discussions could be initiated / completed. I will keep you posted as to what further contact occurs or information that is provided.
