Inspiration from Rich Julien

Well everyone do you miss a great ride right out your front door that is a good work out coupled with a few technicals? Did you like being able to park really easy and not worry about your car because there were a million police right next door? Wasn’t it nice to get in a ride without fighting the traffic to Daley Ranch? Are you getting tired of the to short La Costa trail? Well here is your big chance to be the squeaky wheel,no pun intended. We have the privilege of having a well qualified person speak in our behalf in the person of VP of SDMBA Minett Osaki. The place is Carlsbad City Hall 6:00 pm and we should wear a bike helmet. I don’t know about you but since Fightline has been out I have made a hole in the ozone the size of Texas driving to other places. During the winter it was just plain hateful with the short days. Lately I have been working on the La Costa Trail and am hoping it is building a relationship with CNLM. My experience there has been that mtn bikers have been exceptionally respectful of tha trails and are more than willing to get out there and lend a hand. Lets throw some weight around at City Hall . It is not like we are asking for some extra ordinary thing we just want them to DO THEIR JOB and listen to the people. In the long run it will be a legacy that far out lives the next shopping mall. Thanks Rich Julien

Acquisition of County Airport (FlightLine)

From Minette of SDMBA.

I wanted to let people know that I am going to speak at the Carlsbad City Council Meeting next Tuesday, it starts at 6:00pm at CARLSBAD CITY HALL, 1200 CARLSBAD VILLAGE DRIVE.

I am going to ask that City Council move forward with acquisition of the County Airport Property (Flightline) as soon as possible.

This item is not on the agenda, but I want them to know that the trails community is anxiously awaiting their action.

If anyone is available to attend the meeting, support in the audience would be beneficial. Bring your bike helmet to show your affiliation. I will say that I represent several community groups, and if there are people present in the audience, that will lend credibility.

Update on FlightLine

I got this email;

What’s the updated status of Flighline? The website seems to not be updated with any latest info. I was going to ride flightline today but after reading this i don’t know if i should. Any info?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Response: Don’t ride FlightLine. Go check out some other trials like Elfin Forest or Calaveras. FlightLine is still closed. We are fighting to get it open but the cogs of our government move EXTREMELY slow.

Palomar Airport/Flightline Parcel

Dear Maryanne

On Tuesday March 13th the Carlsbad City Council held the Open Space report hearing. The city council accepted the report even in light of a lot of lobbying against many of the items on the list.

City staff were directed to contact landowners regarding their willingness to be part of the Open Space and to put together funding plans. We are asking you to help us have the county support the trail easement so when the city officially contacts them they can be counted on to support that and the parcel will stay on the active list.

I recall it mentioned that the county felt the Flightline/Airport Parcel was an island of county property surrounded by Carlsbad with no possible links to any county open space or trail system. For that reason it was suggested the property be managed by the City of Carlsbad. Could you help facilitate this by directing our efforts to the correct persons or county agency? The mountain bike community, hikers, runners, dog walkers, children and all the local resident outdoor lovers’ thank you ahead of time.

Open Space Report

Several of the items on the Open Space report are trail segments and not land acquisitions- the committee was appointed to do both. I believe if you lobby just for Flightline now as a stand alone item - you will not be successful. Get it approved as part of a citizen’s committee report- and it gives you a huge boost in credibility. The report should be heard on March 13th. The council has no obligation to implement projects in the priority order- but they would not look very responsible to ignore the committee they apopointed to work on this for a year. Lobby for them to accept the report- then you can pitch all of the reasons why this item is ready to move forward right away.

Also i don’t know if you have taken care of the other two hurdles with Flightline- CNLM and the County. All parties will need to agree so getting the city on board does not yet get you the trail- you need to be working on all three.

City of C-Bad Open Space Meeting Delayed

FlightLine Users;

The City of Carlsbad hearing on the report of the Citizen’s Committee on Open Space has been delayed again.  It will not be on March 6th.

It might be on March 13th-  but even this is still tentative.

Why the delay?  We have been told that landowners who are not happy that their land is on the list are lobbying the Mayor and Council.  Will what was supposed to be an objective priority list of open space and trails based on merit  become a political football?  Will the big developers like McMIllin have more weight with the Mayor and City Council than the residents of Carlsbad?

Is there any reason a landowner should object to their land being on the priority list?  Being on the priority list would simply mean that if a landowner wanted to sell his land, the city might be a buyer.  Seems to me it would be a good thing to know that at any time you wanted to sell there is at least one buyer for your land.  And most landowners don’t understand that open space sales can end up putting more money in their pocket.  The land is appraised at” highest and best use”- not as open space, so you get paid high market value, plus there are tax credits for open space sales- even when the sale is at full market value.

The voters of Carlsbad decided in 2002 that they wanted some of the city’s reserve funds to go toward natural open space and trails.  A citizen’s committee appointed by the Mayor and Council worked very hard for over a year to come up with an objective way to evaluate properties and develop a priority list for consideration by the city council.  They completed their work in January.  It is time for the Council to schedule a hearing on this report- and make a decision in public- and not behind closed doors with developers.

If you care about open space and trails- please- now is the time to call or email the Mayor and City Council. They are hearing from the developers- now they need to hear from you.  Call them at 434-2830 or email mstro@ci.carlsbad.ca.us or council@ci.carlsbad.ca.us.
Thank you for the update www.preservecalavera.org

La Costa Preserve

Hey guys, Here is another fight,
I used to practice downhill on a steep and rocky trails at la costa preserve, these trails was great because of some berms double jumps, litlle drops…etc.Recently all the fun is gone: the jumps and drops have been destroyed. I used to ride there once a week and I’ve never seen anybody but me on this trail, this trial is too steep and rocky for peds and to be riden from the bottom; pretty much an only downhill trail (the trail is marked as alloed to peds/horses and MTB) so I don’t see any reasons why these jumps have been destroyed. These trails are under the CNLM “protection” and there’s a meeeting regarding regulations in the preserve between users and probably somebody from CNLM It’s Saturday 3rd of March at 11am, at the bottom of the trail (Camino

Carlsbad City Council -Open Space Committee Recommendations

Although Carlsbad Oaks North, the area we know as FlightLine, has been mostly graded to make way for commericial development, there is still a lot to fight for. We have discussed joining the fight to preserve open space for mountain biking throughout San Diego and to join another great cause that may include FlightLine in their agenda. Flightline could be used as connector trails, or as they put it, “trail linkages” to other areas that have already been put on the drawing board as land we will be allowed to mountain bike on.
From the Preserve Calavera Website:

After over a year of hard work, the citizen’s Open Space Committee has identified hundreds of acres of open space and several new trail linkages. Now it will be up to the City Council- to put the report on the shelf and ignore it- or to move forward with a plan that will really enhance our natural lands and preserve quality of life for the plants, animals- and people of this area. Please attend the meeting and show your support for more open space and trails. Meeting starts at 6 pm at Carlsbad City Hall- Council Chambers - just east of I-5 on Carlsbad Village Dr.

Carlsbad City Hall Meeting
Tuesday March 6th 2007

City Hall Meeting

There is another city hall meeting approaching where we will be addressing our Save FlightLine cause. Stay tuned for meeting date and time.

Thanks for all of your support!

Great Turnout!

Thanks everybody for the great turnout at the meeting on Tuesday night! Richard did a great job speaking to the Mayor and City Council members about the importance of FlightLine to the community.

Our goal was simply to let the Mayor and city council know that FlightLine is a wonderful resource for the entire community, not just mountain bikers, and that we will be officially addressing them in a few weeks at the open space meeting.

Great Job Everyone!
